ARTIST STATEMENT/BIO

Observations, responses, and reflections about my relationships, experiences and reactions to our world compel me to make my work. I combine drawings, paintings, photographs, hand-made objects and text to make my perceptions visual …work that I hope connects and communicates with other people.

Working in various media, I create lithography, intaglio, serigraphy and archival digital pigment prints, drawings, and paintings. Drawing and writing about my ideas is the beginning step and the constant in my process.

I exhibit nationally and internationally in solo, juried, and invitational exhibitions and have work in permanent and private collections in the United States, Australia, and Malaysia. In 2012, I was invited to become a member of the Artist Printmaker Research Collection (AP/RC) (www.artistprintmakerresearchcollection.org) at The Museum of Art at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, where my work and research materials are archived.

Bois d’ Arc Press, my studio/gallery opened in 2007 in Amarillo, Texas. In 2015, I joined my husband Bruce in Willow Park, Texas, and we closed Bois d’ Arc Press. We are currently drawing up plans for my new studio, BPW Art. I now sign my work Barbara Payne Williams. Earlier work up to 2015 is signed Barbara Payne Ward or Barbara Payne.

I taught two dimensional design, drawing I and drawing II, and English as adjunct faculty at West Texas A&M University, Canyon, Texas. Education includes: MFA, Studio Art; MA, English; BA, English and art, West Texas A&M University, Canyon, Texas. Also, I earned an AAS, graphic design, from Amarillo College, Amarillo, Texas.
